This building mess, hiding a picturesque labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares, is Lisbon's oldest district known as Alfama(*). This is where the Moorish elite lived until 1147, when the city was conquered by the first Portuguese king. Later it became inhabited by the fishermen and the poor.

(*)All Portuguese names starting with 'al' come from the Arabic language.

Two days ago this place was the stage for police brutality as we haven't seen in years. There is plenty of material on the net but I have chosen this shot showing how this beast in uniform is hitting someone who was just doing her job. Another journalist was severely beaten and taken to a hospital, not to mention the number of injured protesters.

This is the hottest and driest winter in the last eighty years, it doesn't rain since November. Forest fires take place every day, crops are lost and there's no food for cattle on the fields.

Shark Eggs With Embryos

 Egg layer sharks hang the eggs on corals, mangrove roots, etc., hence the 'hairdo' on top. The embryos are attached to a yolk sac, visible inside the egg, which feeds them until they are ready to swim and find food for themselves.

Candles For Tibet

March 10 is the anniversary of both the 1959 and 2008 uprisings in Tibet, an extremely significant date in the Tibetan calendar. Most recently Tibetans have been detained and even killed in connection to peaceful protests. Some people joined the resistance and gave a roar of support to Tibetans in Tibet yesterday in Lisbon.

Decay (LVI)

The Lisbon Zoo was founded in 1878. In 1905 it was transfered to the present location, a property owned by the Count of Burnay known as Quinta das Laranjeiras (Orange Tree Farm) at, what was then, the outskirts of town.

Extinct In The Wild

Scimitar-Horned Oryx at the Lisbon Zoo (global conservation program).
It's the largest mammal to have gone extinct in the wild in the last 20 years.

This beautiful antelope species, originally from northern Africa, was introduced to breeding programs on ranches in Texas, USA... for outrageous hunting purposes!!! This is sick.
